Student Alumni Association

The Student Alumni Association was founded in 1985 and is sponsored by the Alumni Association. We strive to foster a sense of pride and tradition in the University. Our programs are designed to promote interaction between students and alumni for the betterment of the University.

SAA's primary goals are to generate spirit surrounding the University among the student body, provide information about the Alumni Association to the student body and keep the Alumni Association aware of developments on campus, which affect student perception of the University.

A big welcome to the newest members of the URI community. We're so glad you're here! Here's our list of the Top Five Links you should visit right now to get some important information—and to give us some information that we need to have on file. Thanks for taking the time to check them out!

1 THE NEW STUDENT INFORMATION FORM This is really important! We need you to fill out the form so we can keep our records up to date – and keep you up to date on important news and upcoming events.

2 THE STUDENT ALUMNI ASSOCIATION (SAA) No link necessary—this is the SAA webpage! SAA runs great (and occasionally gooey) fundraising programs like Oozeball and the Nearly Naked Mile (see below). You should apply to join! Contact Bob Ferrell in Alumni Relations for more information.

3 STUDENT SURVIVAL KIT ORDER FORM Pass this link on to your parents—or to anyone who might want to send you a URI care package. (You can also hand them the card that came with this letter.)

4 HOMECOMING WEEKEND INFO Learn everything you ever wanted to know about Rhody Spirit!

5 THE LEGACY PROGRAM If you have a sibling, parent or grandparent who’s a URI alum, that makes you a legacy. Don’t miss out on your legacy perks!

NOVEMBER 21, 2013

Just before Thanksgiving, t
he SAA hosted its 2013 Nearly Naked Mile run and clothing drive for the Jonnycake Center to help the less fortunate. In a fun twist, students donated the clothes they were wearing, then ran a mile around campus in bathing suits or summertime attire to see what it's like to be outside in the cold with limited clothing—a problem for many in the state and around the world.

Oozeball is one of the greatest traditions running at the University of Rhode Island. This giant mud volleyball tournament takes place every year right before final exams in the Spring semester. Each year, more than 1,200 students and alumni take part in the fun. Oozeball is sure to leave you with mud in your hair and lasting memories.

Get the school year started off right, with a Welcome Kit! Kits are full of the necessities to help students in their first few weeks on campus. Be sure to also check out our combo kit that includes two final exam Survival Kits! The survival kits have a different theme each semester and contain things such as snacks, drinks, school supplies, a t-shirt, and other themed items. Buy a kit today!

Rhody Rally is the school’s largest pep rally, held to boost the school spirit on campus. Rhody Rally is a celebration honoring the sports teams, both varsity and club). It features high intensity performances, contests, giveaways and a bonfire following the event. Rhody Rally always take place before Homecoming in Keaney gymnasium. Tickets and Rhody Rally t-shirts are sold around campus during the week leading up to the main event.

Homecoming is a long standing tradition and the Student Alumni Association is the lead provider of campus spirit. In the week leading up to Homecoming weekend, SAA sponsors advertising events on the quad featuring Del’s lemonade and hot apple cider. The day of the Homecoming football game we help coordinate Rhody tent village filled with fun activities and vendors in front of Mackel Field House. Our Homecoming King and Queen is announced during the Homecoming football game and you’ll be sure to see us rooting for Rhody in the stands!

SAA started a new tradition in March 2012 called the Nearly Naked Mile. This was a community service effort to collect clothing items for the Johnny Cake center in Peacedale while raising awareness of the homeless that inhabit Rhode Island. Students had to donate bags of clothing in order to run a one mile race around the Quad in minimal clothing. We are excited to begin planning our second annual event!

Rhody the Ram, the University mascot, has made his mark at hundreds of athletic games, Admissions events and community appearances. The Ram made its first official appearance in 1929. And while over the years the name has changed from Battering Ram to Ramses to Rhody the Ram, our much-loved mascot has always been right at the heart of URI spirit.

Want to be king of the campus? If you would like to sign up to become Rhody the Ram, please contact and fill out the sign up form.

If you would like to have Rhody make an appearance at your on campus event, please contact his Manager at and fill out the request form. All requests must be made no later than 2 weeks prior to the event.
