[Band] [arrow] 2009 Homecoming October 16-17 From the Rhody Rally on Friday evening to Saturday's 9th annual Homecoming 5K Rhode Race, special reunions and gatherings in the Rhodyville Tent, and the URI-Hofstra game at noon, our 2009 Homecoming Weekend promises to be better than ever. [Athlete] [arrow] 25th reunion of 1984 Championship football team The Alumni Association and Department of Athletics invite members of the 1984 Rams championship football team, their coaches, and their families for a 25th anniversary reunion on October 31. Team members will gather during for a pre-game tailgate, and will be honored on the field during halftime. This special reunion takes place during URI's Family Weekend.

[Football] [arrow] Think Big Plays Two special football-alumni events are coming up soon: On September 26, it's URI-UCONN football at Rentschler Field, East Hartford, and on October 3, it's URI-BROWN in Providence. Get all the details!

[Vegetables] [arrow] Nutrition and Food Sciences alumni networking event The URI Alumni Association, in conjunction with the College of the Environment and Life Sciences and the Rhode Island Dietetic Association, invite you to join fellow URI graduates of the Nutrition and Food Sciences program at a networking event at Eleven Forty Nine Restaurant on September 29.

[arrow] At the chapters On September 24, the Rhode Island Chapter is holding a welcome event in East Greenwich for recent grads. On September 26, the Northern California Chapter is holding its 13th annual clambake, and on October 2, the Arizona Rhode Runners are getting together for a networking event in Scottsdale. [Pharmacy] [arrow] CVS Caremark donates $2 million to URI College of Pharmacy CVS Caremark Corp. has made a $2 million pledge to the University in support of its College of Pharmacy, the largest single corporate gift in the College's 52-year-history. Of the $2 million gift, $1.1 million will support construction of the new $75 million College of Pharmacy home. The remaining $900,000 will fund clinical pharmacy practice research. The gift is part of the $100 million Making A Difference capital campaign. More...

[Lava] [arrow] Research on oxidized lava at subduction zones sheds light on evolution of Earth Assistant Professor Katherine Kelley, a marine geologist, used highly sensitive X-ray techniques to analyze the oxidation of lava from the Earth's mantle and has shed light on processes involved in the evolution of the planet. The results of Kelley's research were published in the July 31 issue of the journal Science. More....

[Dooley] [arrow] President Dooley in the news URI President David M. Dooley may be new to Rhode Island, but he is an active presence in a variety of local media outlets. On Sunday, August 30, he was the focus of a cover story in The Providence Journal and was featured on both WJAR's 10 News Conference and WPRI's Newsmakers. President Dooley's interview with WRNI education reporter Elizabeth Harrison was broadcast on September 1. [Burger] [arrow] New tailgating policy for football games The University of Rhode Island Athletics Department has announced a new tailgating policy for home football games, effective with the 2009 season. Beginning with the URI-Fordham season opener on September 5, athletics donors and the general public will have the opportunity to enjoy a traditional tailgating experience with alcohol. More...

[Tobin] [arrow] Coastal Fellows address environmental problems This summer, two undergraduate students have been knee-deep in research. Senior Ariel Tobin has been testing the potential for growth of a new edible seaweed, while sophomore Ryan Kleinert has been bushwhacking area woods in search of invasive plants. The students' research was conducted through the URI Coastal Fellows Program, a unique initiative designed to involve undergraduates in addressing current environmental problems.

[Faubert] [arrow] Wet summer drives URI Plant Protection Clinic to record year This summer's weather has made Heather Faubert extremely popular among Rhode Island gardeners, landscapers, and farmers. Faubert runs the URI Plant Protection Clinic, where she diagnoses the innumerable diseases, pests, and other problems that southern New England plants battle each year. More...
