Athletic Training Facility

Student-athletes at the University of Rhode Island now have a brand new Athletic Training facility to use, in the prevention and rehabilitation of injuries.

Utilizing the former home of kinesiology in the Tootell Athletic Center, head athletic trainer Kim Bissonette and his staff occupied the new training room on Tuesday, March 20.

“It is still in its first phase, but every aspect of the new training room has developed as we envisioned it, and in some cases, exceeded our expectations.” said Bissonette. “The coaches, student-athletes, and staff have all been impressed with our new location. One clear sign that this is a point of pride for URI Athletics is the traffic we get passing through. We’ve had more recruits visit the facility in three weeks than we had in our previous locations over the last five years.”

Will Daniels, a standout for the Rams’ men’s basketball team, summed it up well: “The new training room is big time! It really shows the commitment that the school has made to its student-athletes.”

Women‘s Rowing

New rowing coach Shelagh Donohue was named the 2007 Atlantic 10 Coach of the Year as she guided the Rams to a second-place finish at the conference championship on April 21.

Rhode Island finished with 44 points—just one point out of the top spot, almost orchestrating an upset of the 11-time defending champion University of Massachusetts.

The two teams entered the final event, the Quad Grand Final, tied with 39 points apiece. UMass took its only first place finish of the day, pushing ahead of the second-place Rams (7:42.4).

URI wrote a new page in the history books by capturing first place in all three Varsity events. It was the first time in A-10 Championship history that a school had swept the Varsity 4, 2nd Varsity 8, and Varsity 8 events. The Rams also grabbed gold in the Novice 8-A Grand Final as well.
