Opening reception&awards ceremony April 15, 4 p.m. June 16-August 31&September 8-30 Cuba Journal/A Sculptural Installation Cuban American artist Ana Flores returned to her birth island for the first time in 40 years in 2002. The pilgrimage had a profound impact on her sense of identity and vision as an artist. The resulting sculptural installation is multi-layered with political, cultural, and personal imagery. Flores has chosen to convey complex themes such as her own family’s exile, Cuba’s history, and Castro’s dictatorship in a deceivingly simple folk art style that includes sculptural toys, puppets and furniture. PHOTOGRAPHY GALLERY Tuesday-Friday: noon-4 p.m.; Saturday-Sunday 1-4 p.m. March 23-May 4 Canadians at Home and Abroad: A Cross-Border Conversation Two contemporary Canadian photographers, Jack MacAulay, who lives in Ontario, and Craig Varjabedian, who lives in New Mexico, explore the natural and man-made landscape. Complements the theme of the annual convention of the Society of Photographic Education, which takes place this year in Newport, R.I. March 16-April 14 Photography by URI Students Honoring the Society of Photographic Education Advanced students of photography studying under Annu Matthew mount an exhibition of their latest works. April 16-May 30 Enduring Moments: Suspensions and Spheres. Features photographs by Barry Anderson from his Suspension Series (2000-2002) and Spheres (1998-2000 ). “We can find refuge from the world in the world,” says Anderson. “And that’s the place—or more appropriately the space—I try to reveal in my videos and photographs, a place between the two extremes—between heaven and earth, expectation and the everyday, the macrocosm and the microcosm, desire and fulfillment.
