Fine Arts Center Galleries Summer 2004 MAIN GALLERY Tuesday-Friday noon-4 p.m, Saturday & Sunday 1-4 p.m. June 16-July 31 & September 5-30 Cuba Journal/A Sculptural Installation Cuban American artist Ana Flores returned to her birth island for the first time in 40 years in 2002. The pilgrimage had a profound impact on her sense of identity and vision as an artist. The resulting sculptural installation (which is accompanied by music) is multi-layered with political, cultural, and personal imagery. Flores chose to convey complex themes such as her own family’s exile, Cuba’s history, and Castro’s dictatorship in a deceivingly simple folk-art style that includes sculptural toys, puppets and furniture. September 26, 2-4 p.m. Closing reception featuring Latin musicians. September 28 Los Balseros, a film about seven Cuban rafters (time TBA). September 30, 3:30 p.m. A tour of the exhibit with the artist. CORRIDOR GALLERY Daily 9 a.m.-9 p.m. Features works by Art Department faculty and invited guests. June 7-21 Beginning with Art: Drawings by Children from the URI Child Development Center June 28-July 30 From the Archives: Exhibition Poster Retrospective September 1-30 Si, Cuba! Color Photographs of Cuba by Alex Pitt Presented in conjunction with Ana Flores’ “Cuba Journal.” In 1988 Gabriel Garcia Marquez invited Alex Pitt to be the first American student in the International School of Film and Television in Havana. While in Cuba, Pitt became friends with a family in Central Havana that provided him intimate access to the rich daily activities of neighborhood life.
