| Spring 2004 Sports Highlights URI had one of its most successful spring athletic seasons ever in 2004, winning three Atlantic 10 Championships on the same day and having another one possibly on the way. On May 2, 2004, the men’s and women’s track & field teams won the Atlantic 10 Outdoor Track & Field Championships in Richmond, Va., and the men’s golf team won the conference championship at Newport National Club in nearby Middletown, R.I. The previous weekend, the women’s rowing team finished second at the Atlantic 10 Championships. It was the fourth-straight Atlantic 10 outdoor title for the men’s track team and the third-consecutive title for the women’s track team. Eric Groce won the gold in the 100 and 200 meter dashes and Colin Aina posted an A-10 Championship record time of 13.88 in the 110 high hurdles. On the women’s side, Pascale Delaunay won the triple jump with a mark of 40-6 , the second-best attempt in A-10 Championship history. Senior golfer David Spitz sank a four-foot putt on the 18th hole to give the Rams the Atlantic 10 Golf Championship by just one stroke over defending champion Xavier. The Rams have won two of the last three championships and four of the last six. Rhode Island qualified for the NCAA Regionals for the 13th straight year. The baseball team is in the midst of its best season ever with a 27-16-1 record and Atlantic 10-leading 15-3 conference record. The Rams have tied the school’s record for wins, and head coach Frank Leoni became the most winning coach in URI baseball history, passing legendary coach Frank Keaney with his 223rd victory. Dan Batz is now the all-time hits leader with 260 and counting, and Zach Zuercher set the URI single-season strikeout mark at 100 and counting. Head coach John Spears retired after 12 years as the Rams’ tennis coach and softball player Kirsten Olson was selected as one of the recipients of the A. Robert Rainville Student Leadership Award.
