Gifting Through Bequests

Marjorie Stein ’67 recently made provisions in her estate plans for the establishment and funding of two scholarship endowments at URI. When asked about how and why she made that decision, Margie said:

“Estate planning is a daunting task. Your own mortality rises to the surface, stares you in the eye, and forces you to search your soul to determine who and what is important to you. After making provisions for my loved ones, I felt something was missing. That soul searching kept taking me back to URI. That is where my father Samuel Stein graduated in 1933, no easy time financially to get a college education. Even though he worked many jobs to get himself through his four years—and it was a struggle—his love and respect for URI was very evident in our home. He was proud when two of his three children graduated from URI. So perhaps that is at the heart of my thoughts.

“But what about my own URI experience? Several of my dearest friends today are those I met at college. My academic work prepared me for a 30-plus year successful career in secondary education. Often I witnessed the distress some students had when finances ruined or interrupted their educational plans. And so, I guess, it went full cycle back to my dad. And that is how I decided if I could help some students with these scholarships, it would be a worthy plan. With the help of my lawyer and the Planned Giving officer with whom I worked, we designed a plan appropriate to my wishes.”
