URI Student Journalism Day
Thanks to the Journalism Department and its Journalism Advisory Committee, about 140 students from 21 high schools learned about the news business last spring from pros who graduated from URI. Months of planning by the Advisory Committee resulted in a day of workshops focusing on reporting, interviewing, copy editing and layout, as well as broadcast news and ethics. Participating schools included Barrington, Cranston West, Cumberland, East Greenwich, Hope, Johnston, the Met School, Narragansett, North Kingstown, North Smithfield, Our Lady of Fatima, Ponagansett, Prout, Rocky Hill, Rogers, Scituate, South Kingstown, Tiverton, and Toll Gate. After a welcome from President Carothers, the students received career advice from 20 alumni and four members of URI’s journalism faculty. Through the support of Bob Beagle, vice president for University Advancement, students enjoyed lunch in the Memorial Union Ballroom. “By all measures, this was a great success,” said Greg Perry ’88, committee chair and vice president of RDW Group in Providence. “Now, we are in the planning stages to make our next program in the spring even better.”
