Faces of guests reflect the mood of a special day. The youngest guest of all, Maeve Rebekah Joly Palumbo, who was all of three weeks and two days old, may not remember much about the event, but in years to come she can check with her parents, Jessica Joly Palumbo ’91 and John Palumbo ’90, about the details.

It was the day everyone had been waiting for, the day that the URI Alumni Association officially opened the doors of the brand new Alumni Center on Upper College Road. Many years in the planning, the handsome shingle building with its elegant public rooms is now the official home-away-from-home for all URI graduates.

The weather cooperated so that the grand opening on Saturday, September 17, could be held under a tent in the Alumni Center gardens and on the building’s expansive terrace. Inside visitors, who ranged in age from newborn to 90, were offered a bounteous spread that included a centerpiece fountain of chocolate for those who fancied some fondue.

After the opening ceremonies, alumni, students, friends, faculty, and staff mingled and chatted about times past and times yet to come on this unforgettable fall day that marked the opening of a new page in the story of the University of Rhode Island.
