The 1892 SocietyAll of a sudden, you’re a member. How and when did that happen? One day you open your mailbox to find a letter from the Office of Planned Giving welcoming you as a member of the 1892 Society of the University of Rhode Island. “Wait,” you say. “I didn’t join anything called the 1892 Society.” The good news is that you are automatically a member of the 1892 Society, the University’s legacy association, when you establish a planned gift here, such as a charitable gift annuity or charitable remainder trust, or have told us of your intention to include the University in your estate plans. Why a legacy society? In earlier decades many generous alumni included the University in their wills or estate plans without notifying us. In some cases the language was vague, leaving us to guess their charitable wishes, or technically incorrect, making it difficult for us to meet their goals. But worst of all, we never got a chance to say “Thank you” or reassure them that we would do our best to deserve the trust they were putting in us. With the 1892 Society, we can. Over the last five years, more than 150 alumni and friends have joined. The benefits of membership Here’s what you can expect as an 1892 Society member: • A special relationship with the University now, during your lifetime. We would be happy to meet with you and/or your advisors for a confidential discussion of your philanthropic goals. • Recognition in our Annual Giving Report and other publications and on our Web site (unless you choose to remain anonymous). • An invitation to the annual 1892 Society Reception during Golden Grad Weekend in June or to the New Members’ Luncheon with the president in the fall. The 1892 Society is our special way to acknowledge your partnership with the University and to honor your thoughtful gift planning. We invite you to contact us.
